Share Your Run Live With Friends - and Hear Them Cheer While You Run
Running alone is fine. Running alone while the people you chose can see
where you are and send a line that is read out to you at kilometre nine
is something else. Here is how Get-Split's Beacon and Pep talk work.
Beacon: a live dot, only for people you follow back
Switch Beacon on before you press start and your run appears live in
the feed of the friends you follow. They see a dot moving on a map, the
distance so far, your pace, and how many seconds ago the last update
arrived. Nothing is public: Beacon is off by default, it is per run,
and only friends you have connected with in Get-Split can watch. When you finish, the live card turns
into the saved activity.
Pep talk: their words, read out to you
A friend watching can type a few words. If you have Pep talk on, the
line is read aloud in your headphones within a few seconds - "Anna
says: keep the turnover, you look strong" - and shown on the recorder
screen with a short buzz, so you never miss that someone wrote even
with the phone on silent. The messages stay on the activity afterwards,
so you can read them at the finish.
What it does not do
- It does not broadcast to strangers. There is no public live page, no
link that works without an account and a follow.
- It does not run your battery flat. Your position is sent every ten
seconds while you move, with gaps filled on the next update rather
than re-sent, and the map on the watching side polls rather than
streams.
- It does not depend on the screen being on. The recorder runs in the
background with the screen locked, and so does Beacon.
Turn it on in two taps
On the recorder screen, before Start, there are two switches: Beacon
and Pep talk. They remember your last choice. Friends see a small
"live" strip at the top of their feed the moment you start.
Why we built it this way
The version of live tracking that shares your location with the world
is a safety problem dressed up as a feature (why we are not Strava). The version that only your
chosen people can see, that ends when the run ends, and that lets them
talk back is the one that makes a long solo run feel shorter. Get-Split
runs on its own servers in the EU; a live session ends when the run
ends, and only the finished activity stays.
